At thirty-one, Ahmed Refaat, a star player for Modern Future FC and the Egyptian national team, departed from this life. Following a heart attack he had during an Egyptian Premier League match in March, the team announced his death on Saturday, citing complications as the cause.
Refaat suffered a collapse in the 88th minute of the match on March 11 against Al-Ittihad Alexandria, which resulted in his admission to the hospital right away and his insertion in an IV. He had a serious decline in health even after receiving a pacemaker and being released to resume treatment a month later.
“Modern Future FC announces the death of Ahmed Refaat, first team and Egyptian national team player, due to a significant deterioration in his health,” the club tweeted. He was taken to the hospital after the health crisis that started on March 11, 2024, where he eventually passed away after a protracted battle.
Within the football community, the news has caused a stir, and players and supporters have been offering condolences. On social media, Liverpool striker and captain of Egypt Mohamed Salah offered tribute to his departed teammate, writing, “May God continue to bless his family and all his loved ones.”
With a history of devotion and love for the game, Ahmed Refaat’s tragic passing represents a huge loss for Egyptian football.
