Significant ChatGPT Outage Affects Numerous
There will be a significant outage early on Tuesday for OpenAI’s flagship chatbot. It’s unclear what caused the outage specifically.
UPDATE 2: According to reports, ChatGPT is experiencing yet another outage. This time, the service went down about 10:30 a.m. ET. Around 10 a.m., more than 5,000 Downdetector reports were submitted.
UPDATE: At approximately 7:30 a.m. ET, OpenAI’s status update page indicated that “all systems operational” meant that the issue had been fixed. The cause of the outage and its justification have still not been disclosed by OpenAI.
First account: Does ChatGPT not function? You’re not by yourself. Early on Tuesday morning, many of users reported problems with OpenAI’s chatbot. The “major outage” was verified by OpenAI, and as of about 3:20 a.m. ET, the business’s website’s ChatGPT status page indicates that the company is working on a solution.
In its statement, OpenAI said, “We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue,” which was released at roughly five in the morning ET.
Downdetector, a website that analyses user reports of website, app, and service outages, has received complaints from thousands of ChatGPT customers regarding problems with the AI technology. Tuesday morning, at 2:30 a.m. ET, the number of reports increased. A few users reported that when they attempted to access ChatGPT, they were getting “bad gateway” error messages. PCMag has contacted OpenAI to inquire about the cause of this outage.
However, ChatGPT might be accessible to certain users. At roughly 6:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday, a brief test using a computer’s web browser saw ChatGPT operating as usual.
According to OpenAI’s status page, some ChatGPT users experienced higher latency on Monday and had trouble getting chat prompts with graphics to function on mobile devices earlier this week. However, OpenAI claimed to have fixed both of those problems.
Users of ChatGPT experienced partial disruptions for four days in a row two weeks ago. During that period, ChatGPT experienced problems because Microsoft’s Bing API, which it uses to conduct internet searches, was down. More service problems were reported to ChatGPT last month than it has since November of last year.
However, the AI company keeps releasing new goods. ChatGPT introduced ChatGPT for universities in addition to its most recent AI model, GPT-4o. It is anticipated to announce a relationship with Apple at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference the following week. It may also be training its next generation of GPT models.
Editor’s Remark: The parent company of PCMag, Ziff Davis, is the owner of Downdetector.
Concerning Kate Irwin
I report on early morning news as a reporter. I was a reporter and producer at Decrypt when I started its gaming vertical, GG, and before I joined PCMag in 2024. I’ve written for Dot Esports, Game Rant, and Input in the past. Since The Sims (yep, the original one), I have been a PC gamer. I eventually constructed my first PC in 2020 with a 3090 graphics card, but I also frequently utilise iOS and Mac computers. As a reporter, I’m excited about spotting insider information and chronicling the vast realm of technology and how it impacts our day-to-day existence.
