The cast of “Kalki 2898 AD” gave an exclusive look at the much-awaited Indian science fiction epic on Wednesday during a national press conference held in Mumbai.

Although the official budget for the movie has not been disclosed, Variety has learned that it is about $72 million. If that’s accurate, it would rank among the most costly Indian movies ever made.

The event, which took place at a five-star suburban hotel, started exactly 75 minutes late. This is typical for Bollywood, but it is quite rare for the disciplined south Indian Telugu film business, which is where “Kalki 2898 AD” originates. With patience, the journalists from all across India awaited the stars’ arrival and cheered and whooped with excitement.

The film’s actors, Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone, as well as producers C. Aswani Dutt, Swapna Dutt, and Priyanka Dutt of Vyjayanthi Movies, were present at the premiere. The evening’s compere was Rana Daggubati, star of “Baahubali.”

Nag Ashwin, or “Mahanati,” wrote and directed the movie. He didn’t attend the ceremony, but he sent a video message with the setting information. According to Ashwin, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world with few resources and just one surviving city, Kasi.

The Complex, a gigantic mega-city built on an inverted pyramid that dominates Kasi, is home to the elite who live in luxury. Those who are outside must deal with hard reality and strive to become Kasi. Shambala is a secret haven that provides safety to individuals of all faiths and ethnicities.

Bachchan portrays Ashwatthama, an immortal figure from the ancient Indian epic “Mahabharata,” in “Kalki 2898 AD.” “Working in an environment where they’ve genuinely gone above and beyond what most of us have been doing for our entire lives in the film industry has been a truly wonderful experience,” Bachchan remarked. And I truly like the fact that we’re a step ahead of schedule, including ourselves into that, and forcing us to operate in environments in which we never would have imagined ourselves to be able to. It has been a wonderful honor, therefore I would want to compliment Nag and the producers for thinking along these lines.
