For the fourth time, iconic Pinehurst No. 2 will serve as the host of the 124th U.S. Open in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
With a 5-under 65, Patrick Cantlay shot off to a quick lead in Pinehurst’s morning wave. He was matched in the afternoon session by Rory McIlroy, and at the end of Thursday, the two of them were still tied for first place. Making his U.S. Open debut, Frenchman Matthieu Pavon ended tied with Bryson DeChambeau at 3 under, while Ludvig Åberg sits one back at 4 under. Tiger Woods, the three-time winner of the U.S. Open, had a 4-over 74.
