Bryson DeChambeau’s initial bogey card
A perfect start to Bryson DeChambeau’s career in the first round of the U.S. The open period has over. On hole No. 7, a 436-yard par-4, DeChambeau mishit the green on his second shot; the ball rolled all the way to the spectator stands set up behind the marker. With a terrific comeback, he almost made a birdie on his chip shot. With his putter, he had a chance to save par, but the ball missed the mark. After his first bogey of the day, he finished the first round at 3 under.
Rory McIlroy moves into a tie for first place after finishing the opening round with flair.
After a birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole, McIlroy finished his round at 5 under, level with Patrick Cantlay on the leaderboard. The four-time major champion shot five birdies and didn’t make any bogeys.
Still undefeated, Rory McIlroy is tied for second.
Rory McIlroy’s last major victory was the 2014 PGA Championship, but he’s positioning himself to break through for the first time in ten years. After making a birdie on No. 16 (523 yards, Par-4) to tie Bryson DeChambeau and Ludvig Aberg for fourth place, McIlroy advanced to second place. At Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 hole on Thursday, McIlroy was playing well; he had made four birdies and had not yet made a bogey. Three major championships have been won by McIlroy after he had bogey-free opening rounds in 2011 (U.S. Open, 2012 PGA Championship, and 2014 Open Championship).
Bryson DeChambeau makes a virtually out-of-bounds shot but nevertheless makes birdies.
DeChambeau made the most of a challenging circumstance. On hole No. 5, a par 5, 582-yard hole, he teed off and almost drove the ball out of bounds, landing it to the right of the fairway close to the perimeter fence. Nevertheless, DeChambeau’s subsequent stroke hit the green, and he two-putted the ball in for his fourth birdie of the opening round. DeChambeau currently shares second place with Ludvig Aberg after making the birdie, bringing him to 4-under overall for the competition.
Xander Schauffele wins his fourth consecutive bogey
After winning his first major last month at the 2024 PGA Championship, Xander Schauffele has been all over the place. In the opening round at Pinehurst Resort’s No. 2 course in North Carolina, he is yet to par. On hole No. 14, Schauffele made his fourth bogey of the round. In addition, he has four birdies to keep him in the hunt. Right now, he shares 21st place.
Bryson DeChambeau climbs the standings
After making his third birdie of the day on hole number three, Bryson DeChambeau is currently tied for third position. At 3-under for the event, DeChambeau is tied with Rory McIlroy and Matthieu Pavon.
DeChambeau’s most recent U.S. 2020 will see Winged Foot open. Despite finishing in second place at the 2024 PGA Championship, he came very near to winning his second major championship last month.
At No. 12, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler both make par.
On hole No. 12, a 4-par, 489-yard course, Rory McIlroy drove the ball 329 yards across the middle of the fairway. Scottie Scheffler, his companion, was unable to do the same and wound up in the rough to the left of the fairway. On his subsequent swing, Scheffler’s club seemed to catch a weed in the uneven turf, leading him to draw the ball and land in the bunker. Somehow, the world champion escaped catastrophe. He reached the green from the bunker and made a short putt to preserve par, keeping his tournament score at 1-over.
McIlroy was within a whisker of making a birdie, but he missed it to the left of the hole. After three rounds, the world No. 3 is still three under.
Following a birdie, Rory McIlroy matched for third place.
Positioned higher on the leaderboard is Rory McIlroy. At hole number ten, McIlroy made his third birdie of the opening round. So far, the Northern Irish golfer’s putter has performed admirably. For a birdie, Bryson DeChambeau chips in.
Despite finishing in second place at the 2024 PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau is attempting to position himself for another U.S. Thursday is when we open.

Top group at the U.S. finishes the front nine. ajar
Three of the world’s best golfers, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy, are leading the group halfway through the opening round. The guy aiming to win his first major in ten years is leading the group.
McIlroy is three strokes behind leader Patrick Cantlay and tied for fourth position at 2-under par. The world’s top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, and Schauffele, the 2024 PGA Championship winner, have had slower starts, with both players at 1-over par.
Scottie Scheffler had trouble in the U.S. early on. ajar
The top golfer in the world hasn’t had the best start to the day. Six holes in, Scottie Scheffler is two over par.
On the par-4 third hole, he made his first bogey of the day after hitting consecutive shots into the bunker that disrupted his momentum. Scheffler misfired on his tee shot and was faced with lengthy putts on the par-3 sixth hole. His second bogey of the day came after a three-putt on the hole.
Rory McIlroy makes a spectacular chip shot to hole out.
Might this be the weekend that Rory McIlroy finally wins a major championship? It appears to be that way.
McIlroy’s opening stroke on the par-5 fifth hole appeared to signal doom after he made his first birdie on the fourth hole. But he bounced back, setting up a forty-six-foot shot for his fourth. The audience exploded in cheers when McIlroy put the ball neatly in front of the hole and watched it bounce and roll into the pin. McIlroy is currently tied for fourth position at 2-under par.
Rory McIlroy finishes hole No. 4 under par.
Early in the first round, Rory McIlroy has been playing aggressively, and it eventually paid off on the fourth hole.
McIlroy nailed his second shot on the par-4, placing it precisely on the green seven feet from the hole, 208 yards from the flag. He was being let down by the putter on the first few holes, but this time he connected and finished under par with a birdie.
On hole number two, Xander Schauffele makes a remarkable birdie.
With just one birdie scored so far on Thursday, the par-4 second hole in the first round has proven to be difficult. The 2024 PGA Champion, Xander Schauffele, however, was unfazed by the difficult hole and began his round under par with a birdie. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, both received par.
Patrick Cantlay wins the U.S. championship round. Start with the lead.
Patrick Cantlay finished Thursday’s round 5-under-par and atop the leaderboard, thanks to birdies on three of the final five holes on the back nine. It was a putting clinic for the pro.
Ludvig Aberg has finished his round and is one stroke behind at 4 under.
Cantlay made the fewest putts of any major championship player during the opening round of play, with just 23 made. Although he claimed to have carried four putters to Pinehurst, the one he chose to use on Thursday was obviously effective for him.
During the broadcast, Cantlay stated, “I’m feeling good about my game.” “I just needed to keep putting myself in the fairway and giving myself opportunities, and I did a good job of that today. I’ve been working hard.”
Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy tee off.
The world’s top three golfers, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Rory McIlroy, are teeing off in one of the most famous groups of the opening round at Pinehurst.
2011 saw McIlroy win the U.S. Open and is still the clear favourite to take home another major. With five victories already in 2024, Schauffele—who is ranked as the world’s best golfer—won the most recent major in the 2024 PGA Championship.
On the opening hole, all three golfers arrived at the green in two strokes thanks to flawless first drives off the tee. McIlroy was within striking distance of opening the day with a birdie, but his putt was not quite there. On the opening hole, all three players made par.
After the first round, Tiger Woods’ shaky putter is gone at 4 over.
Tiger Woods’ first round of 4-over-par 74 on Thursday was marred by multiple letdowns from his putter.
With only 9 out of 18 greens in regulation, Woods had to work extra hard to keep his putter on target, and Pinehurst’s fast, convex greens were not particularly forgiving.
Halfway through his round, he made three consecutive three-putts, part of a run of five bogeys in seven holes. The two par 5s on the course were his only birdies.
If he hopes to make the 36-hole cut, he’ll need to do far better when he tees off this Friday afternoon.
In Woods’s two prior American appearances. He tied for third place in the 1999 Pinehurst Open behind Payne Stewart and finished second to Michael Campbell in 2005. The last time the Open was held at Pinehurst, in 2014, Martin Kaymer won, and he did not compete.
In Round 1, Pinehurst’s No. 5 provides relief.
Pinehurst’s fifth hole is turning out to be the only weak spot on this extremely difficult course.
Ludvig Aberg of Sweden became the most recent player to break par on the 582-yard par 5, arriving at the green’s edge in two strokes and finishing with a birdie to go to 4-under overall.
After eagleing No. 5 earlier in his round, Aberg was able to tie the lead with Matthieu Pavon of France. After making a birdie on the fifth hole, American Patrick Cantlay joined the celebration with another birdie on the sixth, a risky par-3, from 21 feet.
For his round, Cantlay has three holes to play.
Aberg has played 14 holes after beginning on the back nine. Pavon has completed 13 steps.

Brooks Koepka, the winner of the U.S. Open twice, is one of three players two strokes behind. Ludvig Aberg of Sweden and fellow American Russell Henley are with him at 3-under through 12 holes.
Brooks Koepka, the two-time US Open champion, is leading the way.

After ten holes, Brooks Koepka, the winner of the 2017 and 2018 back-to-back championships, is tied for the lead at 3-under par. Matthieu Pavon of France is likewise at minus-3 through eight.
Koepka has not yet made a bogey in his opening round of play, having birdied both of the course’s par-5 holes.
In order to square the game, Pavon made two more birdies on the front side after eagleing the par-5 fifth hole. One stroke behind, seven golfers are tied for third place.
Following a birdie on the first hole, Woods has dropped back to 3-over after bogeying four of his past five holes.

Tiger Woods started his game with a birdie, but after making two bogeys in a row, he was down to 1-over after eight holes.
Out of the 44 players that are over par in the early round, only 13 are in red figures.
Tiger Woods falters to return to parity
Tiger Woods made his first bogey of the first round on hole No. 16, after a misplaced drive into the rough.
Woods had to lay up on his second shot after hitting his drive into native grass to the left of the fairway. His par-saving 20-foot putt barely cleared the cup’s right side.
After making his first birdie on No. 10, the bogey left Woods even for his round.
There have been many more bogeys (and worse) than birdies, so nobody has really set the course on fire in the early going. At 1-under par, sixteen players, including Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, and Collin Morikawa, are tied for the lead.
Wyndham Clark starts defending her US Open title.
Wyndham Clark is dissatisfied with his current form and only wants to finish his U.S. campaign with four strong rounds. This week is Pinehurst Resort’s open defence in North Carolina.
The American surprised everyone last year by winning the major tournament at Los Angeles Country Club by edging out Rory McIlroy by one shot on the last nine.
After missing the cut in three of his previous five starts, including the Masters and PGA Championship, Clark is not overly confident.
“I haven’t been playing my best golf,” Clark said to reporters on Monday.
“I know that might sound like low expectations for the week, but honestly, I’d love to just gain some momentum. It’s been kind of a tough stretch these last few weeks. Really, I’m trying to gain some momentum for the rest of the season.”

Chasing the elusive fifth major, Rory McIlroy
After winning his fourth major almost ten years ago, Rory McIlroy is still hunting an elusive fifth trophy. Despite this, the Northern Irishman hasn’t given up and feels more prepared than ever to break through his drought heading into this week’s U.S. Open.
McIlroy has won 39 professional tournaments worldwide, 26 of which have been on the PGA Tour. Despite this, he is often questioned about his performance in golf’s elite competitions, considering that his most recent major victory was at the PGA Championship in August 2014.
“I’m really proud of my body of work over the past 15 years and everything that I have achieved, whether it be season-long titles or individual tournaments or majors,” McIlroy, 35, said on Tuesday.
“Obviously getting my hands on a fifth major has taken quite a while, but I’m more confident than ever that I’m right there, that I’m as close as I’ve ever been.”

Tiger Woods plays when?
Woods’ first round tee time on Thursday is 7:29 a.m. ET, and he will be playing in a group with Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Tiger Woods: The weather at the US Open will “feel like home”
Tiger Woods is far more upbeat about the U.S. Open than he was before the year’s first two major tournaments, where he had two poor results.
Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina anticipates playing conditions that are more conducive to his game than the mountainous landscape of the Masters or the rainy weather of the PGA.
Woods told reporters Tuesday morning, “It’s going to feel like home. We deal with hot and humid every day in Florida.” It just comes down to staying hydrated and preparing for the mental strain the heat will cause—not just on me, but on everyone as well.”
