Rohit Sharma will lead India in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy and WTC final, according to the BCCI.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), indicating that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain India in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final and the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
The announcement was made on Sunday by Jay Shah, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), indicating that Rohit Sharma will continue to captain India in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final and the forthcoming ICC Champions Trophy.
This choice was made in response to Rohit Sharma’s outstanding performance in leading India past South Africa in the T20 World Cup final in Barbados.
Shah reflected on Rohit’s captaincy and said he was happy to have supported him following India’s defeat in the ODI World Cup final in November of last year, believing a turnaround would lead to the T20 World Cup victory. Shah is optimistic that India will continue to do well in the next ICC events under Rohit’s direction.
“We focused on winning the Cup after winning 10 straight games on November 23 and winning people over. I said in Rajkot that on June 29, we would raise the Barbados flag and win hearts, and our captain accomplished just that’, Shah said.
Shah also proposed a split captaincy plan for India, with Hardik Pandya most likely to take over as captain of the Twenty20 international team after Rohit Sharma retired from the format last year and Rohit Sharma leading the Test and ODI teams.
The competition will return with the ICC Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan in 2019. This will be the tournament’s eighth year of existence. A possible India-Pakistan encounter in Karachi is included in the draft calendar; this is subject to final approval from the BCCI, who may push for a hybrid arrangement akin to the one utilised during the Asia Cup.
Shah paid tribute to the three players—Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja—who declared their retirement from the format following the event, as well as retiring coach Rahul Dravid, to whom India recently won the T20 World Cup. These players are anticipated to return in August for India’s next ODI series against Sri Lanka, and then in early February for three home games against England in preparation for the Champions Trophy.
The BCCI, led by Rohit Sharma, is excited about the events to come and hopes to build on their recent achievements in all formats.
