REPORTS: CURTIS JONES AND JARELL QUANSAH ARE SURE TO MISS UEFA EURO 2024, BUT JAMES MADDISON IS REMOVED FROM THE ENGLAND SQUAD
James Maddison, 27, is reportedly going to be left out of Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man selection, meaning he will not be included in England’s squad for the UEFA Euro 2024. Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah are also not anticipated to board the aircraft in the meantime. On Saturday, Southgate will reveal his final team.
Reportedly, James Maddison has been left off of England’s final 26-man preliminary roster for UEFA Euro 2024.
In a 3-0 friendly victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder played off the bench. However, it appears that he will be the first of seven players to be removed from Gareth Southgate’s preliminary 33-man roster.
For the Three Lions to win a major tournament cap, the 27-year-old will need to wait at least another two years after being included in the 2022 World Cup and failing to play in Qatar.
The final squad will be published on Saturday, one day after England’s final warm-up friendly against Iceland at Wembley. Southgate has until 11 p.m. on Friday to submit his final team.
In July of last year, Maddison made a £40 million transfer from Leicester City to Tottenham, but he struggled to adjust to life in north London due to an ankle injury.
On Thursday morning, rumours also surfaced indicating that Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah would likely not participate in the competition.
The Liverpool pair, who had successful seasons at Anfield during Jurgen Klopp’s final season as manager, will not travel to Germany.
Jones made his mark in Liverpool’s midfield, and Quansah, who made his senior debut for the team in a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in August of last year, stepped up brilliantly in defence.
Jones and Quansah’s exclusions provide Adam Wharton a better chance of making the final team, after the Crystal Palace midfielder made his senior England debut against Bosnia on Monday.
On June 16, England takes on Serbia in their opening Euro 2024 match. On June 20 and June 25, respectively, they play Denmark and Slovenia in their remaining group stage matchups.
After losing to Italy in the Euro 2020 final on penalties three years prior, Southgate will be looking to lead the Three Lions to their first taste of European triumph.
