James Gunn Dispels Superman Set Rumour
The co-head of DC Studios and writer/director of Superman refuted a rumour regarding the release date of the Man of Steel’s most recent motion picture. Supergirl’s alleged involvement in the production was also mentioned by Gunn, who claimed to have “never even said she was in the movie.”
In response to a question on Threads about whether Superman is set in 2021, Gunn said, “No.” A reported logline that stated, “Superman, a cub reporter in Metropolis, embarks on a journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent,” was revealed to be problematic by Gunn in 2023. At the time, he admitted that he didn’t write the logline and didn’t know where it originated.
The first glimpse of Edi Gathegi costumed as Mister Terrific from the DC Universe in the James Gunn-directed film is available thanks to set images from Superman.
Gunn continued, “It has elements of truth (obviously based on things I’ve said in the past).” However, I wouldn’t characterise the story in this way or refer to Clark as a cub reporter. He’s a thirty-year-old investigative journalist. Yes, we do indeed shoot in March. I’m appreciative that our production crew put forth a lot of effort every day to keep things running during the strikes. We were often forced to stop, and we would never have made it to July 2025 if we had.”
Actress Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane, and leading man David Corenswet recently addressed their Superman screen test. Gunn said, “A year ago today, David and Rachel screen-tested for Clark and Lois.” It was magical the first time they read aloud together. What a fantastic year it’s been working with two of the most amazing, lively, and conscientious performers I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. In a little more than a year, [audiences] will get to see them on screen, and I can’t wait.”
According to Brosnahan, who elaborated on her motivation for taking on the part, she has always admired Lois Lane because she is “smart, ambitious, and can be funny.” Brosnahan went on, “When the time was right…James Gunn is one of my favourite authors even if we’re still discovering these characters. We haven’t yet begun filming. You’ll get to meet them in their polished form.” Brosnahan also hinted at the comedic nature of Corenswet’s Superman.
Superman by Christopher Reeves Inspired the New Man of Steel
Focusing on Superman himself, Gunn talked about how the character was inspired by Christopher Reeve’s Last Son of Krypton and questioned how one “take[s] this outrageous concept of a guy who flies around” and makes him into a genuine person. Superman won’t feel like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Gunn further pledged. Additionally, Gunn pledged that Superman won’t be a comedy.
On July 11, 2025, Superman will hit theatres faster than a speeding bullet.
