Choreographer Vijay Ganguly Explores Classic Song Revival
The music industry is remaking many vintage successes for modern listening. Famous choreographer Vijay Ganguly remade “Ishq Vishk.” This tendency and his experience rewriting legendary song choreography are discussed.
Vijay finds reworking classic song choreography tough and gratifying. Remakes are among his experiences “I’ve done many. While performing ‘Poster Lagwa Do’ from Luka Chuppi, we created a new hook step. We knew classics couldn’t be touched, so when we sang ‘Ishq Vishk,’ we kept Ahmed Khan sir’s hook step.”
Recalling his remake career, Vijay says, “Remakes dominated in the middle. Either the audience didn’t like the new music or a generation didn’t know these songs and discovered the original after the remake. With such amazing music, that phase is almost done, I think. I think remakes are good because they revitalise classic tunes.”
Remaking a song from his father’s film Saaheb was Vijay’s most personal remake. Recalls, “My father’s ‘Saaheb’ (‘Yaar Bina Chain’) was another remake. Being on that 1983 set as a child and shooting the same song again was surreal.”
Choreographers like Vijay Ganguly face obstacles and chances from remakes of iconic songs. Some masterpieces are immovable, but others come alive through current renditions.
