Host nation Germany will face an in-form team in the quarter-finals in Stuttgart on Friday, July 5. Spain Team
Spain and Germany meet in the UEFA Euro 2024 quarter-finals on Friday in Stuttgart, one of the most highly-anticipated matches of this summer’s tournament. Both teams have won the title three times, but only one can reach the semi-finals, leaving hopes of a record fourth European title alive. The Spanish team are enjoying their best performance so far in the tournament, with a 100% win rate from their four matches, but the German hosts will be hoping to secure a place in the last four against Portugal or France.
La Roja reached this stage by winning all three of their Group B matches and also beating Georgia last Sunday in the round of 16. Luis de la Fuente’s team was outplayed by the Georgians, but once again had a convincing success on German soil, scoring four goals to qualify. Like France, Spain have only conceded one goal so far this summer and are unbeaten in their 10 European matches, excluding penalty shootouts. This is the fourth time in five European matches that a Spanish team has reached the quarterfinals, and the semi-final clash here is reminiscent of the 2008 final, in which La Roja won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Fernando Torres. However, Spain has not beaten a European or World Cup host country in a final since 1934.
Germany beat Denmark in the round of 16 last weekend and are seeking to qualify for their first European Championship since 1996. Two second-half goals gave Denmark a slim lead, but the goal was ruled out by VAR. But Julian Nagelsmann’s men are in the quarter-finals and looking to reach the last four against arguably the toughest opponents. It’s Germany’s first time in a major international quarter-final since 2016, but it’s their 19th overall, including 14 World Cups and five European Championships, giving them the most number of at least quarter-final appearances of any European country. But while the team has only beaten Spain twice in their last 11 meetings, they are unbeaten in eight home games against Spain and the hosts have never been eliminated in the quarter-finals of a European Championship.

How We Got Here
Spain’s 100% win streak has seen them top Group B ahead of Italy, and they were able to extend that position after the round of 16 thanks to a 4-1 win over Georgia. De la Fuente’s team is the only team in Germany to have won 100% of their 90-minute matches. Germany also won Group A but missed out on top spot in the national team due to a draw with Switzerland. They followed that up with a 2-0 win over Denmark in perhaps the most exciting quarter-final match between the two teams.
TEAM NEWS
SPAIN: De la Fuente is expected to remain at the top alongside Álvaro Morata, alongside Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams. Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino could challenge Pedri in midfield alongside Rodri and Fabian Ruiz, but the Barcelona man is still expected to be named in the starting eleven. Nacho Fernández is fit again but is unlikely to start in front of Robin Le Normand and Aymeric Laporte’s defence with Dani Carvajal and Marc Cucurella on either flank.
Potential Spanish starters: Simon Carvajal, Le Normand, Laporte, Cucurella. Pedri, Rodri, Luiz. Yamal, Morata, Williams.
Germany: Nagelsmann could bring back Jonathan Tah, who was suspended for the Denmark match, with Nico Schlotterbeck as his replacement. Maximilian Mittelstedt is out of the starting line-up but could return in place of David Raum, Florian Wirtz could replace Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala could move to the right wing. Niklas Füllkrug, who scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw against Spain at the 2022 World Cup, is unlikely to replace Kai Havertz in attack, while Toni Kroos, Robert Andrich and Ilkay Gündogan will remain in midfield.
Germany’s starting lineup candidates: Neuer-Chimich, Tah, Rudiger, Raum. Kroos, Andrich. Musiala, Gundogan, Wirtz. Havertz.
Prediction
Spain are the undisputed favourites due to their form and it is unlikely that this match will be one-sided for either team, but home advantage is very important at this stage and could help Germany win. A draw and extra time wouldn’t be a big surprise, but we expect the Germans to end Spain’s winning streak with a close margin in either 90 or 120 minutes. Tips: Spain 1, Germany 2.
