The scandalous love life of Shania Twain: betrayal, infidelity, and lover switching with her closest friend
After Robert Lange, a record producer, had an affair, Shania Twain, then 58, looked for love in an unexpected place. Here, we examine her turbulent romantic history.
Although US singer Shania Twain has been happily married for almost ten years, their relationship didn’t start off like most relationships do.
Once the Grammy Award winner and her husband Robert “Mutt” Lange parted ways, she fell in love with Frederic Thiebaud. Robert had an affair with Shania while working with Marie-Anne, the singer’s close friend and Frederic’s former wife. “I got what I deserve—I got the greatest man on the planet,” Shania thankfully said.
Shania, 58, claimed that their shared tragedy was what led to their long-lasting romance. In 2011, she told Redbook magazine, “I got to watch Fred going through the same thing I was and I admired how he handled it.” “I fell in love with him at that point because he was so admirable in every way.”
Six months after they first met in 1993, Shania married Robert, who was seventeen years older, and they moved to Switzerland from their home Canada. They welcomed their son Eja in 2001. Marie-Ann was employed by the couple as a secretary, and prior to 2008, when Shania’s husband unexpectedly requested a divorce, the two families enjoyed vacations together.
The celebrity said that although she was close to Marie-Ann, she didn’t know Fred well, adding, “Because of his crazy work hours, he wasn’t really a part of our daily lives.” He would often be present at things like weekend dinners, when we would all sit down to eat together and call it a day. After then, it would just be him and Mutt talking.”
After formally starting dating in 2009, Shania and Fred—who were parents to Johanna and Marie-Ann—were engaged in December 2010. They were married in a sunset ceremony in Rincon, Puerto Rico, on New Year’s Day 2011, one month later.
The pair can now joke about their peculiar relationship beginning after almost ten years of marriage. According to Shania, “We’ve had to laugh at a few things,” Notebook said. “‘Wow, are you still not over that particular detail?’ he’ll exclaim. I have to provide an explanation in my song. We’re not at all cautious while discussing our experiences together.
With her 2017 single “Poor Me,” which is “very much about betrayal,” the singer was able to channel her sadness into her work. It’s acceptable to experience self-pity occasionally—it’s highly fulfilling, and I won’t apologize for it. It’s taking responsibility for your experiences.”
Shania said last year that her ex-husband, the record producer, was still seeing Marie-Anne, and their communication was restricted to texting regarding their son Eja. She stated, “Mutt and I parent well together— for people who don’t talk to each other,” in a podcast segment called Armchair Expert. “We don’t play any games like that because we both love our son so much.”
