The agony of a 16-year-old rape survivor who feels let down by the legal system is told in “Kooki.”

At the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, a Hindi movie from Assam that tells the story of a 16-year-old rape survivor’s anguish will be presented at the Marché du Film.

Almost a month before its June nationwide release, on May 21, the 116-minute feature film will have its premiere at Palais H.

The Marché du Film, the commercial arm of the Cannes film festival, is described as “the industry’s largest international gathering of film professionals” on its LinkedIn profile.

The movie’s main heroine is a Hindi-speaking girl who experiences mental anguish and gang rape before feeling let down by the legal system.
Under the direction of Pranab J. Deka, the film tells the story of a young girl who survived being raped while showcasing many aspects of Assamese culture.

Produced by Junmoni Devi Khound, the owner of the local streaming site Niri9, Kooki is her debut feature film.

“I consider it a great honor to have my first feature picture screened at Cannes. In addition to honoring cinematic excellence, this platform raises the voices of those who dare to speak out on important international concerns, according to Khound.

Khound stated, “I think our film’s subject matter deserves a global audience because it calls for awareness and significant legal amendments.” The industry decided to make a Hindi-language movie in an effort to break down barriers between regions and highlight the distinctive stories and skills of Assamese filmmakers all around the nation.

Bibhuti Bhushan Hazarika, Preeti Kangkana, Ranjib Lal Borah, Kamal Lochan, Ritisha Khound, Rajesh Tailang, Dipannita Sarma, Ritu Shivpuri, Devoleena Bhattacharya, and Bodhisatwa Sarma are among the actors who appear in the movie.

Three songs in the movie feature vocals from Assamese artist Krittika Sharma, Bollywood vocalists Sunidhi Chauhan, Divya Kumar, and Mohammad Faiz.
